It is astounding the number of people who ignore warnings to evacuate or even head to the affected area to catch a glimpse at the ravages of Mother Nature.

Evacuate When Asked

If you are asked to evacuate your home, it is best to do so as quickly and calmly as you can. Rescue efforts may not be available for those who remain behind — and it is selfish to risk the lives of members of the rescue teams because you didn’t feel like evacuating.

It is a good idea to create an evacuation plan with your family before there is a threat so that you will all be able to remain calm during a crisis.

You should have an emergency supply kit, an emergency binder, and a solar-powered radio that you can carry with you when you need to leave. (The radio will allow you to continue listening to the instructions as you are traveling.)

Be Prepared to Shelter In Place

You also need to have supplies inside your home that will allow you to wait for a rescue team should the disaster strike suddenly. Bottles of water, canned foods, and other non-perishable food items should be stocked. The goal is to have five days worth for each member of the household.

Remember, The food in your refrigerator can spoil if the power goes down, which is common after a natural disaster. Since you may be without power for several days, you will want to have lanterns and flashlights readily available.

Another key factor in preparing for natural disasters is to make sure you keep enough medications on hand for those who need them on a regular basis. A basic first aid kit should also be stocked with essentials.

If you have small children in the home, make sure you have the necessary supplies on hand to keep them cared for. Stocking up on baby items such as diapers and formula is necessary.

You will also want to ensure that you have a supply of personal items like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and toothpaste, which can all help you to stay healthy during a natural disaster.

Many people worry about their pets during a natural disaster, but you may not be able to keep them with you during that time. If possible, though, store food and water for your pets as well so that you won’t be sharing the food you stored for your family with them.

Natural Disasters are Frightening For Everyone

A natural disaster can be very scary for everyone of all ages. However, children may be especially frightened because they may not fully understand what is happening or why all of the adults are stressed. Make sure that everyone is able to get plenty of rest and that children are allowed to share their feelings openly. Many parents think it is best not to tell children what is going on, but that tends to make them more afraid. Kids will definitely know something bad is taking place around them and will naturally have their own set of questions and concerns.
